Kunming is located in the central-eastern and slightly northern part of Yunnan Province, between 102°10′32″ East Longitude and 103°40′44″ East Longitude, and 24°24′11″ North Latitude and 26°30′53″ North Latitude. It is bordered by Qujing City and Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture (红河哈尼族彝族自治州) to the east, connected to Honghe Hani and Yi Autonomous Prefecture to the south, adjacent to Yuxi City (玉溪市) and Chuxiong Yi Autonomous Prefecture (楚雄彝族自治州) to the west, and faces Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture (凉山彝族自治州) of Sichuan Province across the Jinsha River to the north, and is adjacent to Zhaotong City (昭通市) to the north.

Climate

Kunming has a subtropical plateau monsoon climate, characterized by mild weather and spring-like conditions throughout the year, with distinct dry and wet seasons. Spring is warm and dry with little rainfall; summer is cool without extreme heat, with concentrated rainfall; autumn is cool and pleasant with clear skies; and winter is dry and free of severe cold. The average annual temperature is around 15℃, with an average annual sunshine duration of about 2200 hours, a frost-free period of over 240 days, and an average annual precipitation of about 1000 millimeters.

Best Time to Visit

The best times to visit Kunming are from March to May and from September to November. From March to May, everything is rejuvenated and flowers are in full bloom. The Western Hills (西山) are covered with a sea of azaleas. From September to November, the weather is crisp and clear, making it the perfect season to watch red-billed gulls. Red-billed gulls gather in large numbers at Cuihu Park (翠湖公园) and other places.

Tourist Attractions

Stone Forest Scenic Area

Located on Shilin Avenue in Shilin Yi Autonomous County (石林彝族自治县), the Stone Forest is a World Natural Heritage site. It is renowned for its spectacular and bizarre stone peaks and has been rated as a “World Geopark” and “World Natural Heritage Scenery” by UNESCO. The stones in the area take on various shapes, and there are many underground caves, making it a typical karst wonderland.

Yunnan Nationalities Village

Situated at No. 1310 Dianchi Road in Xishan District (西山区滇池路1310号), Yunnan Nationalities Village offers an immersive experience of the cultural traditions of 25 ethnic groups in Yunnan. It features ethnic architecture, songs and dances, costumes, cuisine, and festive activities such as the Dai Water-Splashing Festival (傣族泼水节) and Yi Torch Festival (彝族火把节), allowing visitors to gain a deep understanding of Yunnan’s diverse ethnic cultures.

Dianchi Lake

Located at No. 1318 Dianchi Road in Xishan District (西山区滇池路1318号), Dianchi Lake is the largest plateau freshwater lake in Yunnan Province and the sixth-largest freshwater lake in China. Visitors can take a boat tour to enjoy the scenery of this “pearl of the plateau,” stroll along the lakeside to feed birds, or climb a hill to get a panoramic view of the lake. Every winter, a large number of red-billed gulls migrate from Siberia to Dianchi Lake for the winter, creating a spectacular sight.

Cuihu Park

Situated at No. 67 Cuihu South Road in Wuhua District (五华区翠湖南路67号), Cuihu Park is a top choice for a leisurely stroll in Kunming. The park is beautifully landscaped with emerald waters. In winter, red-billed gulls flock to the park, where locals and tourists can feed them and interact closely, making it a perfect spot for taking memorable photos.

Daguan Park

Located at No. 284 Daguan Road in Xishan District (西山区大观路284号), Daguan Park is situated on the northern bank of Dianchi Lake. The park is famous for its numerous historical sites, especially Daguan Tower (大观楼), which was built during the reign of Emperor Kangxi. The tower is renowned for its 180-character couplet, known as the “longest couplet in the world.” The park also features pavilions, waterside corridors, artificial hills, and beautiful gardens.
